Biden Must Protect Dreamers from Legal Limbo Despite GOP Pushback
An August federal regulation on DACA creates no permanent legal status for those enrolled in the program nor expands eligibility for the 1+ million young people waiting to enroll. DACA remains in legal limbo. Passing legislation permanently protecting all Dreamers must become a top priority.
TRUMP’S POSTMASTER GENERAL DEJOY MUST GO
President Biden has promised to cut greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, which requires electrifying the government’s vehicle fleet. Since 1/3 of them are USPS trucks, Postmaster DeJoy’s award of a contract replacing its 30-year-old fleet largely with gas guzzling trucks cannot be allowed to move forward. Neither can DeJoy’s continuing privatization plans. Biden must nominate two Commissioners committed to replacing DeJoy.
This election’s clear choices
Democrats are working for all Americans. Republicans are tearing the country apart, setting groups against one another, for the benefit of the rich. This is no hyperbole; the choice you make will determine the future of the country.
FRIDAY RECAP: September 2, 2022
Against all political wisdom, Democrats running across the country in primaries and other elections have simply outperformed. Not all won, but all beat the president’s 2020 numbers up to 9%. This unforeseen upsurge of power is likely driven by abortion and the Supreme Court’s horrendous recent ruling. But abortion is only the first wake-up alarm. MAGA Republicans, the people driving the party, do not care about equal rights, civil rights, or even human rights. Starting today, we have our best shot at saving our democracy. So write some postcards, ring doorbells, meet your neighbors, and, oh yeah, save America! Please check out our Daily Actions here…
Two Presidents fight for Democracy
The ongoing war in Ukraine, once again, highlights Trump's support for authoritarian regimes, be they in Russia, North Korea, or Brazil, while President Biden has been a vigorous defender of democracy at home or abroad.
REMARKABLY, GOOD GOVERNANCE WORKS
In normal times, when people are not constantly lied to or threatened, we would be sure the President was on an unstoppable roll from here to election day. But the MAGA megaphone has obscured the remarkable success our government is now enjoying at a time that is, even by historical standards, challenging.
PROTECTING INDIVIDUALS’ REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH DATA
With Roe’s reversal and the tsunami of anti-abortion laws going into effect in many states, Americans urgently need to be able to protect their personal reproductive health information from the prying eyes of the anti-abortion Inquisition. With only five states and no federal statute protecting our privacy rights, Congress must craft legislation precluding the collection of unnecessary data and limiting companies from disclosing this data to third parties. The My Body, My Data Act, co-sponsored by Senator Wyden, is a good first step.
FRIDAY RECAP: August 19, 2022
President Biden and Congressional Democrats are on a role, and the Democrats’ chances of retaining control of Congress are improving. This stems partly from passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, but it’s also due to all the good things Biden and the Democrats have done for the American people in the first 18 months of his administration. Contacting your Members of Congress and urging them to educate voters about Democratic accomplishments so they’ll elect more Democrats to Congress in November is one way to protect our democracy. Another is by working to get out the vote. For ways you can become involved, check out “Action Three” in this week’s Daily Actions.
Student Loan Forgiveness Is Essential In These Uncertain Economic Times
For many years, Democrats have called a reduction in student loans today valued at over $1.7 billion. These loans have millions on the edges of poverty and from living the American dream. Today almost 40 million citizens are struggling under the burden of their debt and others have abandoned the idea of going to college because of the economic consequences.
DEMOCRATS WIN FIGHT FOR ALL AMERICANS – ESPECIALLY ON CLIMATE!
President Biden’s signing of the Inflation Reduction Act should give us confidence that America will respond to challenges, not by distorting them for political gain, but with reason and compassion for the good of all Americans.
BIDEN AND DEMOCRATS HAVE OUR BACKS
Because of MAGA Republican noise, the Biden administration’s accomplishments often get lost. Among his successes are 9+ pieces of legislation—including the first gun safety law passed in 30 years and the largest climate investments ever—and rolling back Trump policies, appointing the first Black woman Supreme Court Justice and the most federal judges since 1962, reinvigorating NATO and leading its support for Ukraine, and adding 10+ million new jobs. Touting these accomplishments to voters will ensure increased Congressional majorities, so Democrats can further improve the lives of all Americans.
FRIDAY RECAP: August 12, 2022
Okay, it’s been a good week for Progressives and Democrats. But a lot of work needs doing before November elections — in 12 weeks!!!!! First, if you haven’t made your calls to your Members of Congress, hit the links below. Second, join Indivisible Oregon or any other activist group, and get to work. It looks good at the moment but . . . It is still imperative for our Members of Congress to continue hearing from us—about passing the Inflation Reduction Act in the House, reforming the social security system so all Americans can retire with dignity now and in the future, and legislatively tackling other problems facing Americans.
CANCEL THE SENATE’S AUGUST RECESS
Senate Democrats, having passed the Inflation Reduction Act, must keep their momentum going by voting on the House-passed legislation counteracting the Supreme Court’s attacks on abortion, contraception, and same-sex marriage and the assault weapons ban. Senate leadership must also force MAGA Republicans to publicly oppose voting rights, immigration reform, DC statehood, and police reform, clearly demonstrating which party represents voters’ interests. Solidifying Democrats’ control of Congress is more important than the August recess, which must be canceled.
A Midterm Message: The Lesson from Kansas
Last week, Kansans sent a clear message: abortion rights are not up for debate. In the first state referendum on reproductive freedom since Dobbs, we learned a critical lesson. Abortion rights mobilize voters in every state including the deep red. This is the path to a midterm blowout.
THIS WEEK, DEMOCRATS WILL WIN THE FUNDS FOR A BETTER AMERICA
In today’s 50-50 Senate, where 60 votes control almost everything, the rules allow for only one shot at reconciliation which can pass with a simple majority. Republicans have blocked every helpful bill to come out of the House, but they couldn’t stop this one. The House and the President still need to sign off, which is expected by the weekend. This legislation shows that Democrats work for the people.
