Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s attack on “woke-ness” is a page from the Republican playbook. Avoiding substantive debate, the GOP takes social wedge issues and, using fear-mongering and lies, further drives Americans into opposing camps. But woke means to be aware of issues of racial and social justice. So his attack on those of us who are woke is another example of Republican racism in new clothes.

Congress must intervene to prevent the Supreme Court’s ultraconservative super-majority from constraining both the executive and legislative branches and destroying our democracy in the process.

Last year large corporations realized the highest increase in the rate of profits since 1976 much of it derived from monopoly price gouging. The super-rich are the principal beneficiaries, at the same time, most Americans are struggling to make ends meet. Inflation has compounded the difficulties for millions to afford the basic necessities of life.

Horrendous images of the nightmarish atrocities committed by Russian soldiers are only now coming to light as areas are liberated. The West’s refusal to hold Putin accountable for past atrocities in Chechnya, Crimea, and Syria, by cutting off Russia’s billions in fossil fuel revenue, reinforced his belief that he could act with impunity towards his neighbors. Our government’s failure to hold Trump and his MAGA mob accountable for their attacks on “the other,” the freedom to vote, and the peaceful transfer of power sends this same message. Both must be combatted.

Nearly 200 new state bills aim to erode protections for transgender and gay youth in public schools. Transgender youth are particularly vulnerable with 86% reporting suicidality and 56% reporting a suicide attempt. Despite this, the GOP keeps writing legislation targeting trans children as “good politics,” to fire up their base and vote in November.

The foundation of the Republican party was revealed this week at the confirmation hearing of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, and that foundation is deeply racist. Republicans alleged she was soft on crime and, maybe, not a loyal American. Worse, they said, she may have a plan to splice critical race theory into law.

Inflation has many causes including long-term structural supply chain issues exacerbated by the pandemic, corporate greed, and the Russian sanctions. The best short-term fix for American families is to shore up their buying power by lowering the costs of essential expenses like prescription drugs, child care, health care, and energy. Congress can do that, right now!
