Background
Today, the initial phase of our campaign for the For the People Act ends. This landmark bill to restore our democracy:
Strengthens access to and integrity of our elections.
Ends gerrymandering.
Reforms campaign finance laws to empower us.
Stops dark money, large contributors, and foreign entities from flooding us with disinformation.
Imposes ethical codes on SCOTUS and codifies congressional and administration ethics.
The GOP opposes it for the same reasons we support it: free and fair elections that lead to a government for the people.
We will continue to advocate for S1 and the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act as they move through the Senate, while working for other bills to restore our democracy, centered in racial justice: John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, DC statehood, US Citizenship Act, and court reform. When necessary, we will advocate to end Republican abuse of the filibuster to require a Senate super-majority to pass legislation. Created to defeat civil rights legislation, the filibuster allows Senators who represent only 21% of the US population to undermine legislation supported by the vast majority of us.
