BACKGROUND

Today is a two-part call: pass election protection laws and pass all the infrastructure funding, of the physical and human kind. We need it all for a thriving democracy:

Work that pays fair wages and offers fair advancement.
The freedom to vote, a system that counts all votes, and politicians who represent us and not just the wealthy few.

Right now we have a wealth-generating system that extracts resources from workers and the environment without paying a fair price in return, a tax system that concentrates wealth in a tiny group, and an election system that gives outsized influence to these same wealthy few. For too long it’s been a system of government handouts to the rich and crumbs for everyone else, especially Black and Brown people.

Now we face a watershed moment. Congress must pass corrective legislation:

S.1, the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
Physical and human infrastructure bills.

Saving democracy and socially just infrastructure are interdependent. Even as our MoCs turn towards infrastructure this week, we need to keep reminding them of the urgency of saving our freedom to vote.
