Deadline for Democracy
BACKGROUND
“We are witnessing a concerted attempt to destabilize the democratic process and delegitimize our multi-racial democracy, carried out in full view of the American people.” Sec. Clinton
The urgency of protecting our freedom to vote from the Jim Crow Faction cannot be overstated. Attempts to undermine our freedom to vote -- from gerrymandering and funding disinformation campaigns with dark money to criminalizing voter registration and attempting to overturn election results in a violent coup -- are grounded in the Jim Crow Faction's white supremacist vision.
Our vision is different. We believe that, no matter the color of our skin or where we come from, we all deserve the freedom to make our voices heard and elect representatives that govern in our name and enact our priorities. We reject the Jim Crow Faction's intent to silence our voices, take away our freedom to vote, and block legislation we favor -- all so they can hold onto power.
We and our leaders cannot turn away. We ask our Members of Congress to cancel recess and long weekends and to pass the For the People Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, the Washington DC Admissions Act, and the Judiciary Act of 2021 by simple majority.
1. Call the Senate.
Script for Oregon Senators
SEN. MERKLEY: Portland office: 503-326-3386 | D.C. office: 202-224-3753
My name is [--] and I'm a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code].
This is a turning point for our nation. I ask you, again, to use your majority and pass the For the People Act and the Judiciary Act of 2021, before you go on another recess and without the constraints of the filibuster, so we can safely and freely cast our ballots. A talking filibuster won't do, as the Jim Crow Faction will use it to stall beyond the redistricting deadlines.
