Progressives have been fighting for S.1 to save voter rights. The gop is using it as smokescreen, created and financed by billionaires, to defeat the bill which would also end dark money.

BACKGROUND

On January 8, Republicans, including a top official from McConnell's office, were told that overcoming support for a hugely popular proposal, now-called For the People Act, would be almost impossible. 

The support, remarkably strong even among conservative voters, was built on the Act’s donor transparency provisions to stop “billionaires from buying elections.” 

Republican operatives then undertook a massive effort to shift the national conversation. Their focus became “election fraud” which was juiced by Trump’s Big Lie.

No doubt, the weakened GOP needs to suppress voters to win elections. But the goal for rich was to safeguard the pipeline of dark money. 

The result: The debate has been focused on voting rights -- exactly as the billionaires hoped -- and dark money is rarely mentioned.

The groups doing the heavy lifting include ALEC, the Heartland Institute, the Heritage Foundation’s Action arm, the RNC’s Committee on Election Integrity and many more. This campaign was financed by billionaires.

They inspired local activists, placed Facebook ads, and circulated model voter suppression bills. Even progressive watchdogs were surprised to see the close coordination on messaging and tactics between the GOP and “nonpartisan” advocacy groups. 

To stop billionaires from buying elections, fight for S 1’s passage.
