Regulate Guns & Policing

Protect Us, Not Senate Rules

Jump to today’s actions:

BACKGROUND

Despite a slim Democratic majority, the House passed two gun regulation bills, the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2021, and reauthorized the Violence Against Women Act this year. Senate Democrats also introduced legislation to renew the assault weapons ban.

These bills languish in the Senate, however, because Republicans filibustered legislation designed to protect us. Their legislative agenda: Make Democrats fail voters. We need Democrats to take a strong, public stand against this Republican obstruction.

Pandemic isolation and job loss, Republicans stoking hatred and violence -- all have worsened our epidemic of gun violence and police brutality. The bills that curb these horrors are popular among voters but opposed by the gun lobby, Republican mega-donors, and their wholly owned politicians.

Eliminating the filibuster is key to passing popular legislation to reign in gun violence and police brutality, build infrastructure, and save our democracy. We ask Senate leaders to:

  • Bring popular legislation to the floor for a vote, despite filibuster threats.

  • Eliminate the filibuster and make them vote against bills their constituents want.

  • Broadcast the Republicans' abuse of the filibuster to obstruct legislation we need.

Our senators need our grassroots support. Call them. Together, we can make a difference.

1. Call the Senate.
