“JUSTICE FOR ALL” DEMANDS CONGRESS PASS THE GEORGE FLOYD JUSTICE IN POLICING ACT
Jump to today’s actions:
Background
Derek Chauvin murdered George Floyd. The jury’s verdict provides no justice for others brutalized and murdered by the police. We must pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act now.
It’s possible, even likely, that Chauvin would have walked free had it not been for 17-year-old Darnella Frazier who stood and recorded the nine agonizing minutes of the murder. Instead, yesterday Chauvin was handcuffed and locked in a cell.
But justice can’t depend on a brave teenager. And we can’t just hope the systemic racism that infests too many law enforcement departments will disappear.
We need laws.
The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act would go a long way to restrain the law enforcement officers who have terrorized, brutalized, and murdered so many unarmed Black men, women, and children. Among other things, the Act would:
Ban chokeholds.
End racial and religious profiling.
Eliminate qualified immunity, the legal shield for cops.
Reprogram funds into community-based policing.
The House passed the Act but it is deadlocked in the Senate.
“This (verdict) can be a moment of significant change,” Biden said yesterday. “We have a chance to change the trajectory in this country.”
Call your Senators now. Democracy demands justice for all.
