Background

As part of President Biden’s goal for uniting the country, he wants to revitalize America by spreading $2 trillion in infrastructure projects across red and blue states. It has solid support (56%) from voters.

This bold proposal is also Biden’s invitation to his long-standing goal of bipartisanship.

It’s enticing to Republicans because it means truckloads of cash will be dumped into local economies for highways, airports, bridges, and federal buildings (all potentially named for right-voting members of Congress).

Is Biden’s pursuit of bipartisanship a noble fantasy diverting away from strengthening democracy?

The GOP has shown no interest.

Senate Republicans are working to block any Biden initiative, as they did with Obama. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has already rejected Biden’s infrastructure plan.

Republicans simply don’t want this President to have an achievement, especially one popular with the public.
So, bills to strengthen democracy and the country languish in the Senate.

It’s time Congress and Biden stop pursuing congressional bipartisanship and pursue the most basic function of a democracy, reflecting the will of the people.

Bring S. 1, the “For the People Act,” to a vote. It’s urgent.

This may force a filibuster showdown. Good. It’s time to act.
