BIDEN, PUSHING FOR UNITY, RELOCATES BIPARTISANSHIP

Background

Joe Biden, hours after winning the election, pledged “not to divide but to unify . . . ”

How’s that going? One measure of success would be a harvest of legislative accomplishments that are bipartisan. By this yardstick, Biden’s quest for unity is in big trouble.

That’s because Republican politicians are working to maintain power. To do that, they feed lies and hate to their base, rather than improving the lives of their constituents.

Even when measures have no financial impact, as we saw this week with the anti-Asian hate crimes bill, leading Republicans voted against the Democratic proposals.

Instead, Biden is pursuing actions supported by ordinary voters outside of Washington. Polls show support for his actions:

  • Pandemic relief (61%)

  • Raising taxes on the wealthy (67%)

  • Gun control laws (64%)

  • Rejoining the Paris climate agreement (57%)

Infrastructure may have the best shot at bipartisanship. Governors and mayors, regardless of party, want to demonstrate to their voters that they can restore vibrancy. Even a plurality (42%) of Republicans support infrastructure improvements.

In essence, Biden is shifting the locale of bipartisanship, from Capitol Hill to the whole country.

Tell your MoCs to build local support, even in red areas, for Biden’s infrastructure plan.
