Background

Today, in honor of Tax Day, we call on Congress to increase taxes especially on corporations, and give DC tax-payers a vote in Congress.

Tax revenues had already dropped before the pandemic, thanks to Trump’s 2017 tax scam. In 2018, the US lost more revenue than any other developed country. Then the pandemic hit.

  • Republicans tried to use deficits to justify stingy relief programs.

  • State and local tax revenue plummeted 6.4% overall in the first six months.

  • Tens of millions of people lost jobs, homes or both while the 50 biggest US companies cut jobs and boosted shareholder wealth.

  • Worldwide, billionaires became $4T wealthier.

Biden’s $2T jobs jobs-for-infrastructure bill includes a 7% corporate tax increase. Congress should also increase taxes for wealthy individuals.Voters in both parties support raising taxes on corporations. Even some mega-wealthy individuals asked the government to tax them more.

Today, on traditional Tax Day, call your members of Congress and tell them you want corporations and the wealthy to pay higher taxes; and ask them to end DC’s status as the only capital of a democracy where its residents have no national representation.

1. Call the Senate.

Script Oregon Senators

SEN. MERKLEY: Portland office: 503-326-3386 | D.C. office: 202-224-3753

My name is [--] and I'm a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code].

We need to correct the Trump tax scam and raise taxes on corporations and the super-wealthy. Wealth distribution is out of hand. I am irritated that our government is subsidizing corporations while so many people scrape by. Additionally, I hope you’ll work to increase tax fairness by giving DC tax payers a voting voice in both houses of Congress.

SEN. WYDEN: Portland office: 503-326-7525 | D.C. office: 202-224-5244

My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code].

I am glad to see your strong support for higher taxes. As the Chair of the Finance Committee, you are in a unique position to promote taxing corporations and the wealthy at higher taxes, and I am counting on you. I also hope you’ll work to increase tax fairness by giving DC tax payers a voting voice in both houses of Congress.

D.C switchboard: 202-224-3121

My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [city], [state], [zip code].

I am well aware that we had lost more revenue than any other developed country in the world in the first year of the Trump tax code. That was before the pandemic. Now we face widespread, long-term damage that is still going on. The Trump tax code is too puny to tackle repairs. Let go of the debunked theory of trickle down economics and support a tax code that requires corporations and the super-wealthy to pay their fair share.

2. Call the House.

I am a strong supporter for higher taxes on corporations and the wealthy. The Trump tax code reduced our tax revenues more than any one nation in its first year. That was before the pandemic. We need a fair tax code that pays for much-needed investments in physical and human infrastructures and gives DC tax payers voting representatives in both houses of Congress. Thank you.

As chair of the infrastructure and transportation subcommittee, please work for much-needed investments in physical and human infrastructures.
