FREE THE FEC
Jump to today’s actions:
Background
We have a way to make free and fair elections much more fair.
Currently, billionaires fuel political campaigns by funneling unlimited contributions to Super PACs. Worse, the PACs illegally coordinate with candidates because the campaign finance watchdog, Federal Election Commission, has been muzzled.
The “For the People Act,” now before Congress (HR1 and S1), will fix those problems.
The first job is to unleash the FEC. For years, the six-member commission has been deadlocked 3-3 between Republicans and Democrats, allowing obvious violations of the law to go unchecked.
The For the People Act reduces the size of the commission to five members (including one independent) to break the tie. Then it will be possible for the FEC to again conduct investigations and audits, hold hearings, issue regulations, and force disclosure.
One of the first areas a revived FEC will focus on is the flow of Dark Money into Super PACs and, especially, how that money is illegally directed to help candidates. The FEC will, at last, be able to define and police illegal campaign coordination.
We need our Members of Congress to fight for the FEC and elections that are more fair.
1. Call the Senate.
Script Oregon Senators
SEN. MERKLEY: Portland office: 503-326-3386 | D.C. office: 202-224-3753
My name is [--] and I'm a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code].
I am glad to see you support S1. But even now, before it can become law, over 160 voter suppression laws are working through State Houses. Please speak out about this massive threat to our elections and how S1 can stop voter suppression. Also, show how the For the People Act will protect and strengthen our democracy. Use your townhalls and letters to constituents to build a broad base of support for the passage of S1.

Script for Republican Senators
D.C switchboard: 202-224-3121
My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [city], [state], [zip code].
Please don’t reject ideas that will make our democracy stronger simply because they come from Democrats. S1 is a bill that will broadly strengthen the foundations of our democracy. There is a growing preconception that Republicans don’t care about free and fair elections. Please show that you do by supporting the For the People Act.
2. Call the House.
