Background

With Democrats now controlling Congress, we can move forward from having the best democracy that money can buy.

Now wealthy megadonors and corporations secretly give huge amounts of dark money to candidates, funneling cash through “charitable” organizations created solely for that purpose. They anonymously buy millions of dollars of often false or misleading ads to hype the candidate who will promote their interests.

Big money in elections is corrupting and anti-democratic.

The For The People Act (HR1/S1) has provisions to strengthen our election finance laws. It protects our democracy from being smothered by big money donors who have no accountability or transparency. It includes requiring:

Organizations like SuperPacs to disclose donors, and it prohibits transferring money between groups to hide the sources of their money.

Leaders of corporations and other organizations to disclose their spending on political ads.

Corporations to disclose political spending to shareholders and shareholder approval of some political expenditures.

Government contractors to disclose their political spending.

Internet platforms to disclose who is buying digital and social media ads.

HR1/S1 has broad support among average Americans, and our representatives in Congress will listen to us when we call and ask them to work for its passage.
