CONGRESS MUST PROTECT IMMIGRANTS AND THEIR FAMILIES
Jump to today’s actions:
Background
COVID-19 doesn’t discriminate based on immigration status, and neither should public health or economic policies. Yet, undocumented immigrants, half of whom are essential workers on the frontlines risking their lives to keep America running, have been largely excluded from prior relief packages. They and their families are at greater risk of both infection and deportation—which cannot be allowed to continue.
The Biden-Harris administration recognizes undocumented essential workers’ indispensable role in fighting COVID, but its bill contains only half measures.
Although the House’s HEROES Act included economic relief for 9.5 million taxpaying undocumented immigrants (through ITIN), the Senate wouldn’t agree. December’s bill extended benefits only to families with one citizen spouse. While Biden covers households of citizen children with noncitizen parents, too many families are still excluded.
Reversal of the Senate budget resolution blocking benefits for undocumented immigrants that passed with 8 Dem votes allows Dems to better recognize contributions of hardworking immigrant communities:
Make all taxpayers, regardless of immigration status, equally eligible for relief funds
Provide undocumented essential workers with healthcare, other benefits and immediate green cards, as Hispanic and Progressive Caucuses demand, rather than forcing them to wait for down-the-road immigration legislation.
Anything less is unconscionable.
1. Call the Senate.

The coronavirus pandemic does not discriminate based on immigration status, and neither should public health or economic policies. That undocumented taxpaying immigrants—half of whom are essential workers risking their lives and those of their families to keep America running—have been largely excluded from prior relief packages is unconscionable. To redress these problems, when the American Recovery Act comes to the Senate, I expect you to work with Senators Warren and Padilla to ensure that it:
- makes all taxpayers, regardless of immigration status, equally eligible for relief funds.
- provides undocumented essential workers with healthcare, other benefits and immediate green cards, rather than forcing then to wait for possible immigration legislation down the road. Thank you for your continuing concern for immigrant communities and your work on their behalf.
