BIDEN’S PLAN TO EXPAND HEALTH INSURANCE
Jump to today’s actions:
Background
With Democrats in control, health insurance can now be expanded to help 15 million uninsured people during this pandemic and beyond.
With 10.1 million Americans unemployed, including 2 to 3 million who lost employment-based health insurance, almost two of every three Americans are worried about paying for healthcare in this emergency.
President Biden, not waiting for Congress to pass his Covid relief plan, has already moved to revive the Affordable Care Act, make Medicaid more available, shore up COBRA, and provide a range of subsidies to help cover their costs.
For the ACA, which has a limited enrollment period of six weeks in the fall, Biden has opened a “special enrollment period” for three months beginning Feb. 15.
He would also remove administrative barriers to Medicaid, allowing more people to access the program.
Among other moves, Biden proposes to cover 100% of COBRA premiums through September 2021 for people who lost their employer-based insurance during the pandemic.
Healthcare should not be another luxury of the well-off, but a humane response in a time of great need, and a tool to dismantle poverty. We need our MoCs to support expansion of healthcare coverage in this pandemic and beyond.

With two of every three Americans worried about getting and paying for healthcare in an emergency, this is the time to push for greater expansion of health insurance. President Biden has begun with efforts to expand the ACA and Medicaid. But we need Congressional action to make permanent the efforts to cover more Americans, for their security and to break the link between poor health and poverty.

You have constituents who need health insurance in this time of great need. No one should suffer or die because they lack coverage. This is cost effective, and it is an opportunity to break the link between poor health and poverty.
