Pass a Bold Infrastructure Plan & the For the People Act
Jump to today’s actions:
Background
Having gotten shots in arms and checks to people, Biden now wants to put people in jobs. His infrastructure plan will add 2.7M more jobs over ten years than the market alone. We need them.
The pandemic wiped out 22M jobs in 2020. Last month 10M people were jobless; 24% of them unemployed for a year. Most Biden jobs will need only a high school or associate degree. They will reduce our national carbon footprint and rebuild our infrastructure; create good-paying union jobs; address racial injustice; and invest in Black, Brown and Indigenous communities.
Progressives say it's a good start but should go further. Republicans say some items (like elder care) aren’t infrastructure. Some moderate Democrats want a lower corporate tax hike. Turning the plan into law will take time.
That puts For the People Act (S1/H1) at risk. The voting reforms in S1/H1 are essential medicine for a healthy democracy. Without its gerrymandering prohibitions, the anti-government, racist wing of America’s politicians could win control of government -- state and federal -- for another decade. We need to tell our Members to pass SI/H1 asap, and then pass the most ambitious version of the Biden plan.

1. Call the Senate.

I support Biden’s plan to add 19M jobs that will reduce our national carbon footprint and rebuild our crumbling infrastructure; create good-paying union jobs; address racial injustice and the public health crisis; and invest in Black, Brown and Indigenous communities. In fact, I want the Senator to advocate for even more work on the climate crisis.
But I am deeply worried about the viability of S1/H1. We can’t afford to lose our democracy, and I really believe that is what's at stake here. Congress must pass S1/H1 immediately so that the anti-gerrymandering and other voter protections can be implemented in time for 2022. I support ending or reforming the filibuster to pass this bill.

Script for Republican Senators
I support rebalancing the tax code by raising the corporate tax rate to 28%. The world’s billionaires made $4T during the pandemic, increasing their wealthy by 54%. Meanwhile, Main Street lost 22 million jobs last year, and the climate crisis continues to tear through our country. We need our elected leaders to intervene and use the unique powers of government to balance and aid market forces. Please support rather than obstruct President Biden’s infrastructure plan and tax code revisions.

I support a stronger, more expansive infrastructure plan with sufficient funding to address the climate crisis. Please treat Biden’s plan as a floor, not a ceiling, on this issue. Thank you also for voting for HR1. Please message your support for its rapid passage in the Senate. I believe our democracy is fundamentally threatened by gerrymandering and voter suppression.
