Background

The American Rescue Plan passed, Biden’s cabinet appointees are being confirmed, Sens. Merkley, Klobuchar and Schumer just introduced For the People Act (S.1) in the Senate, and Congress is drafting transformative infrastructure and immigration reform bills.

Meanwhile, the House continues passing progressive legislation to improve our lives and extend our rights. This week, it:

  • Reauthorized the Violence Against Women Act, which closes the “boyfriend loophole” for firearms purchases, increases accountability for crimes on tribal lands, provides additional funding for culturally specific services and for rape prevention and education, and strengthens protections for transgender women.

  • Deleted the expiration date for ERA ratification.;

  • Extended the Paycheck Protection Program’s application deadline to May 31.

  • Passed the American Dream & Promise Act, creating a path to citizenship for millions of “Dreamers” and TPS holders, and the Farm Workforce Modernization Act, establishing a path to legal status for 12+ million immigrant agricultural workers and their families.

These achievements are due to grassroots activities across the country, for which we can take some credit. Take time to celebrate, thank House MoCs for their good work, and pressure the Senate to overcome GOP obstruction so all this progressive legislation becomes law.

This week the House passed, without his assistance, the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, the American Dream & Promise Act, and the Farm Workforce Modernization Act--all of which are popular with the American people and will improve he lives of his constituents. While he did vote for the 60-day extension of the Paycheck Protection Program’s application deadline, which only 3 GOP Representatives opposed, rather than continuing to obstruct, he should have voted for these other three popular and important bills as well. He needs to remember that we are his constituents.
