DEMOCRACY UNDER ATTACK AT HOME AND ABROAD)
The United States must combat insurrectionists at home and help Ukraine protect its fledgling democracy
QUICK READ: Democracy is under siege in both the United States and Ukraine. MAGA Republicans have tried to minimize the January 6th insurrection by redefining it as legitimate peaceful protest by Trump’s enthusiastic supporters. Trump’s ally in Moscow, Vladimir Putin, is engaging in the same chicanery, calling its invasion of Ukraine an effort to “liberate” Ukrainians from “neo-Nazi” rule. Both these “big lies” have had devastating consequences for the lives of millions. They must not go unchallenged.
TAKE ACTION NOW:
BACKGROUND
The first Congressional hearings have begun documenting how the January 6th insurrection, directed by Trump, posed the greatest danger to our nation since the Civil War.
MAGA Republicans’ assault on democracy is ongoing:
Our electoral system is being subverted in multiple ways
Women are losing the right to control their bodies
Trans people have become their bête noire
In Texas, 18-year-olds can carry assault rifles but highschoolers cannot read certain books.
Putin’s Ukraine war is even more menacing to democracy and stability around the world.
While unable to exterminate Ukraine, his war of attrition has killed thousands of civilians and displaced millions more and devastated numerous towns and cities. Russia’s looting and destruction of Ukraine’s rich grainlands and its blockade of the Black Sea, together with climate disasters, have also left 49 million people facing famine.
We cannot close our eyes either here or abroad:
We and our NATO allies currently meeting in Brussels must dramatically increase the supply of advanced weapons to Ukraine
The DOJ must vigorously prosecute all insurgents and co-conspirators to the full letter of the law.
Trump and Putin must face serious consequences for their deplorable acts.
