Appeasement in Ukraine is not an Option

NATO must not reward Putin’s aggression

QUICK READ: For some weeks now leaders in several Western capitals have floated the idea of a cease-fire as a first step toward ending the war in Ukraine, even as Putin has intensified the scale of the war and rejected serious negotiations unless Ukraine agrees to cede the Donbas region to Russia. President Zelenskyy has unequivocally rejected this “peace for land” formulation. In the face of Russia’s intransigence, NATO nations must double-down on their military and economic support for Ukraine

TAKE ACTION NOW:

BACKGROUND

Although Russian efforts to exterminate the Ukrainian nation has failed, the invasion has  caused  the deaths of thousands of  civilians, the displacement of millions,  and the devastation of  numerous towns and cities.

Putin’s blockade of grain from Ukraine has also jeopardized the lives millions of people facing starvation

If successful, Moscow’s current offensive against gas-rich Eastern Ukraine would substantially increase Russia’s energy resources, enhancing his global power.

Several prominent world leaders have called for an immediate ceasefire and ultimately a “land for peace solution.”

President Zelenskyy has rejected such a scenario. Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity cannot be negotiated away. A cease-fire would simply freeze the conflict and allow Russia to reinforce its military and politica l presence in. Ukraine. Moreover, Russia’s past acts of aggression and Putin’s call to eliminate the Ukraine, suggests that any peace agreement would be problematic.

The U.S and its NATO allies, must stand firmly with Ukraine by imposing an oil embargo, increasing the economic boycott and supplying advanced weapons.  Substantial negotiations can only take place after Russia withdraws its forces. Pressuring Ukraine to appease the Russian leader would be a sign of weakness and reward Moscow for violating international law.
