Background
Trump’s been assaulting our system of government for years. So why should we believe he’ll just leave quietly on Inauguration Day, when his words suggest otherwise?
Trump’s efforts to overturn the election have become ever more egregious. Having failed to coerce local officials to illegally award him their states’ electors and having lost resoundingly in the courts, he’s now plotting a military coup to cling to power.
Additionally, on Saturday he invited his violence-prone followers to interrupt Congress’ certification of the Electoral College vote on January 6. For a sitting president to advocate or attempt to carry out either of these is clearly impeachable conduct.
A president who so blatantly violates his oath of office and is prepared to use forceful means to remain in power does not deserve the right to be a candidate for this office ever again. To preclude a future run for president, he must be impeached and convicted.
Multiple hearings are unnecessary because evidence of his ongoing seditious behavior’s been widely reported. Articles could be easily drafted over the weekend.
The next Congress must reclaim its oversight role, investigating Trump’s abuses. This Congress must ensure a peaceful transfer of power by impeaching and removing him.
