TO PROTECT DEMOCRACY, THERE MUST BE ACCOUNTABILITY

caely.barrett@gmail.com

Background

Donald Trump has committed crimes that have inflicted great damage on our democracy for his personal benefit.

He and his cronies must be held accountable.  At the least there must be Congressional investigations.  This is not revenge.  No one should be above the law.  Failure to act would constitute a subversion of justice.

Trump abused the power of the Presidency to obstruct justice, attack political opponents and defraud the United States.   We can no longer assume that any incoming President will do otherwise.  Ignoring or forgiving the criminal actions of this administration would be to hand the next would-be autocrat a blueprint.

Congress must also move immediately to enact reforms that will close the loopholes that Trump exploited.

The House has already begun, passing The For The People Act which would strengthen ethics rules and expand voting rights.  The Protecting Our Democracy Act, aiming to prevent Presidential abuses, restore our system of checks and balances, strengthen accountability and transparency, and protect our elections, is in committee.

The election of Warnock and Ossoff in Georgia would remove Mitch McConnell from control of the Senate and free these vital acts from his obstructionist grasp.

And we can work to make that happen.

Your silence has enabled Donald Trump to abuse the power of the Presidency to obstruct justice, attack political opponents and defraud the United States. We can no longer assume that any incoming President will do otherwise. Ignoring or forgiving the criminal actions of this administration would be to hand the next would-be con man or autocrat a blueprint. On your way out the door, you can finally act to protect the future of our democracy by demanding investigations into Trump's criminal actions.
