TRUMP WON’T CONCEDE. AND HE’S STILL ENDANGERING OUR DEMOCRACY.

caely.barrett@gmail.com

Background

Trump has begrudgingly allowed the transition to begin.  But he insists that he hasn’t conceded.

Even though the GSA Administrator has green-lighted the transition, Trump is still hanging on by his fingernails. He’s still in court, still attempting an electoral coup, still abetted by the Republican party.  Trump’s racial disenfranchisement strategy and absurd conspiracy theories are still circulating on the public square and on social media.

He’s being supported in the halls of Congress by Republicans.  Whether through overt defense of Trump or their complicit silence, they are normalizing an attempt to disenfranchise millions of Americans. And millions of Republican believe them.

Subverting our democratic electoral process promises a future path for members of an outnumbered, outvoted party with shrinking support in this country to maintain power.  The very attempt threatens to severely damage our basic democratic institutions and our democracy itself.

It’s time for Democrats, including our President-elect and our MOC’s, to defend our democratic institutions forcefully, vocally and through Congressional action including investigation and censure. To stand up and call out this attempted coup for what it is.

1. Call the Senate.

Script Oregon Senators

SEN. MERKLEY: Portland office: 503-326-3386 | D.C. office: 202-224-3753

My name is [--] and I'm a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code].

Even though the official transition process has begun, we cannot minimize the damage the caused byTrump’s assault on our democracy. He and his party have undermined confidence in our electoral system, and convinced his followers that Biden and his presidency are illegitimate. I ask you to:

  • Move to censure Trump immediately.
  • Publicly condemn Trump’s misuse of his office to further his attempted coup and correct the record by pointing out Trump’s lies and their corrosive effects on our democracy.
  • Convince Democrats’ Senate leadership of the need for a coordinated, ongoing, public campaign to counter Trump’s misinformation campaign and impeachable behavior.
  • Press Republicans to stop confirming judges and, instead, provide meaningful COVID relief and a budget provision to assist those suffering from the pandemic and its accompanying economic dislocation.

D.C switchboard: 202-224-3121

My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [city], [state], [zip code].

Your silence enables Trump to continue to misuse his office in a vain attempt to remain in power, despite badly losing both the popular vote and the electoral college. If you truly love the Constitution, you will have the courage to condemn his serious abuses of power, which undermine confidence in our electoral system, erode democratic norms, incite his followers to violence, and destroy the orderly transfer of power. Your constituents need you to demonstrate that you take your constitutional obligations seriously and to provide meaningful relief from COVID and the economic dislocations it has created.

2. Call the House.

  • Demand that Trump be immediately censured for his unprecedented assault on our democracy and that the appropriate committees initiate investigations of his abuses of power, with all remedies, including impeachment, considered.
  • Call for House rules to include the ability to enforce subpoenas through inherent contempt.
