THE BIPARTISAN INFRASTRUCTURE PLAN ADVANCES, surprisingly
Jump to today’s scripts:
BACKGROUND
NEWS: A bipartisan $1 trillion infrastructure bill passed a major hurdle last night in the Senate. Among those voting to support the bill, Mitch McConnell.
WHY IT MATTERS:
17 Republican senators broke ranks to support the bill.
America’s long-ignored infrastructure is finally getting some attention.
A trillion dollars will be injected into the economy, mostly into America's middle class.
Instead of tax breaks for the rich, this is an experiment in “trickle up” economics.
It suggests that bipartisanship is not a hallucination.
DEAL DETAILS: Funds will go for roads and bridges, strengthening power transmission lines, extending broadband internet into rural America, deploying electric vehicle charging stations nationwide, and lots more.
THREATS: The bill still faces days of crafting the legislative language NECESSARY for a Senate vote. And a filibuster could block that path. Democratic party unity is essential, especially in the House, and Rep. Peter DeFazio has already called the bill “crap.” And then, Republicans could still bolt.
YOU’RE NEEDED: Call your representatives in Congress and tell them you support this bill. But urgently, they also must stay through August to pass bills that block voter suppression -- because democracy’s infrastructure needs strengthening too.
1. Call the Senate.
Tell your Senator you support this bill. (If infrastructure improvement would benefit you, tell them that as well.) However, their important work is not done. Your Senator must stay through August to pass voting rights bills because democracy’s infrastructure needs urgent attention.
Be sure to include your name and zip code.
