What’s at stake with voter suppression?

BACKGROUND

Voting built and continues to shape a government that influences almost every aspect of daily life -- from the air we breathe to the water we drink, and even our sense of safety.

Denying the vote can leave individuals and communities ignored, suffering in poverty and crime and illiteracy and disease and hopelessness.

Sure our government is flawed, but voting in fair elections is the only way we can make it work for all of us.

After 20 years of erecting barriers to the ballot box, the GOP, in at least 17 states this year, has enacted 28 new laws to block even more voters. These new laws also rig the vote-counting system.

The frenzy to enact anti-voting laws ensnared many groups, including disabled vets, who rely on mail-in ballots and other voting features. One vet said: “That’s what we fought for -- the right to vote.”

In America, each citizen has the right to vote, and each vote must be counted fairly. We must nurture this inheritance to keep improving our government.

If this is important to you, please call your Members of Congress and lend your support to the voter protections now at critical stages in the Senate and the House.
