BACKGROUND
Issue: Gerrymandering and seizing state election systems will likely flip the House in 2022 so, in 2025, the GOP can certify their own choice for president.
News: When Senate Republicans blocked the For the People Act which would void state voter suppression for federal elections, democracy lost its best chance of stopping the GOP from destroying democracy’s foundation, free and fair elections.
Reactions:
GOP Senator Rand Paul said: “The idea of democracy and majority rule really is what goes against our history and what the country stands for.”
Independent Senator Angus King, who lectured on American politics, warned that “this is an incredibly dangerous moment” that opens the door to authoritarianism.
Context: To overthrow democracy, the GOP -- the party of white men -- can control the federal government through minority rule. To do that they will:
Suppress all voters except the “right” ones,
Rig vote counting,
Gerrymander,
Filibuster progressive proposals,
Pack the courts,
Preserve Electoral College’s imbalance.
Impact: Trump showed that a GOP government will produce unrestrained racism, government corruption, erosion of public health, and violent right-wing extremism while perverting the rule of law and truth itself.
