Background

Abraham Lincoln had the most precise definition of American democracy; “government of the people, by the people, for the people.”

He also said it “ . . . shall not perish from the earth." He may have been wrong about that.

Warnings that democracy is in mortal danger are coming from home and abroad, from scholars and even Republicans. And the prognosis is bleak.

For years, the GOP has waged a guerrilla war seeking to enrich the rich and establish a “pure” (racist) democracy.

Their latest attacks are aimed at restricting the freedom to vote and undermining confidence in election outcomes, or simply “rigging” elections, as Obama confirmed last week.

What can be done?

First, Democrats must fix their shortcomings by:

Recruiting effective communicators of democratic values.
Embracing a sense of urgency commensurate to the danger.

Then, Democrats must:

Win back communities of color lost in 2020.
Build greater turnout in every election.
Obliterate GOP lies.

The Senate must pass the voting protections in the For the People Act. But in the 50/50 Senate, Democrat Joe Manchin announced Sunday that, essentially, he won’t fight GOP election rigging.

We must demonstrate the urgency to Manchin and our Senators that democracy is at grave risk.
