Fight for Our Freedom to Vote
Strengthen our democracy, pull down barriers curtailing the freedom to vote for People of Color

Background
“Almost every other country is based on a creed, a religion, a geography, an ethnicity, but not us. We are based on an idea . . . that all men and women are created equal.”
President Biden, Memorial Day 2021, Arlington National Cemetery
But Trumpists are working hard to destroy that idea, now by blocking access to the ballot box. Nearly 55% of Black Americans believe Republicans don’t want them to vote.
They are right. More than 20 new voter suppression laws in Republican-controlled states will make it harder for people of color to vote.
Late last Friday night, Texas Senators worked to pass another voting roadblock for people of color.
“Democracy itself is in peril,” warned Biden.
It’s our turn, as it has been for every generation, to protect democracy and make it stronger.
Right now, democracy demands:
The For the People Act to overturn most of these state voter suppression laws.
The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to prevent future discrimination.
Ending the Jim Crow filibuster so the majority can rule.
The Tulsa race massacre ended 100 years ago today. But racism still corrodes our democracy. We must protect and strengthen democracy by fighting to ensure that every American can vote.
1. Call the Senate.
Script Oregon Senators
SEN. MERKLEY: Portland office: 503-326-3386 | D.C. office: 202-224-3753
My name is [--] and I'm a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code].
I am grateful for your progressive stands but now is the time to fight to protect democracy by passing the For the People Act. And if the GOP filibusters, it’s time to end it and restore majority rule to the Senate. As a constituent, I need every ounce of your strength to fight for the right of every American to vote.

Republicans seem ready to discard our democracy. Blocking Black Americans and other people of color from their constitutional right to vote is a disgrace. Please support S1, the For the People Act.
2. Call the House.

I am grateful for your progressive stands and now is the time to fight to protect democracy by passing the John Lewis Voting Advancement Act.
