Background
We deserve an election process that helps America. We deserve elected officials who will improve our lives and earn our votes. Campaign finance abuse, lack of transparency/oversight into campaign finance, has created a corrupt system where domestic and foreign money holds the power over elected officials – at the expense of the voter.
The For the People Act takes steps to reform, increase transparency, and decrease corruption in campaign finance – giving back power to the people and the voters.
America’s election system has always been vulnerable to foreign interference. Citizens United, along with the internet and social media, accelerated this interference.
The For the People Act begins to rebalance the scales by:
Requiring providers and platform to work to ensure political advertisements are not purchased by foreign nationals
Extending the ban of foreign nationals’ contributions to include contributions via corporations, unions, political action committees
Creating a reporting requirement to disclose foreign contacts to a campaign
Clarifying what constitutes coordinating with a foreign national
We worked hard to overcome this corrupt system to win in 2020. We must now help Congress pass the For the People Act so our next elections we be about voters – not money.
