FOR THE PEOPLE ACT COMBATS VOTER SUPPRESSION AND MAKES OUR REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY MORE INCLUSIVE
Jump to today’s actions:
Background
America deserves an inclusive democracy where all can can make themselves heard, all ballots have equal worth, and our needs take precedence over special interests’.
Republicans subvert democracy—as support for Trump’s attempts to overturn the election and their escalating reliance on gerrymandering and voter suppression demonstrate.
Without radical intervention, these tactics could cost Democrats control of the House in 2022 and stymie Biden’s agenda.
For the People Act (H.R.1/S.1) is the necessary antidote—making illegal Republicans’ anti-enfranchisement tactics. It creates the infrastructure to permanently bolster voters’ influence:
Nullifies voter ID requirements, letting voters swear to their identities
Stops bogus voter roll purging
Makes voter registration near-automatic and allows same-day registration
Lets students vote where they attend school
Restores voting rights to 4.5 million convicted felons
Commits to extending voting rights to DC (through statehood) and U.S. territories and restoring VRA
Protects against deceptive practices and spread of misinformation
Bans partisan gerrymandering and increases protections for communities of color
With H.R.1/S.1, and its companion bills, John Lewis VRA and DC Statehood, we can nullify the GOP’s attacks and create a democracy responsive to our needs and priorities. Let’s regularly encourage our MoCs to work for these bills’ swift passage.

S.1 and its later companion bills—the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and DC Statehood—give Congress the power to reverse both Trump’s recent assault on our democracy and the harm done by the GOP’s voter disenfranchisement campaign over the last several decades. S.1 will, among other things, reform our elections, make voting more accessible to all citizens, give each vote equal weight by eliminating partisan gerrymandering, enfranchise convicted felons, and ensure that our democracy actually responds to our needs and priorities. I urge you to continue to advocate forcefully for the swift passage of this vital legislation, without diluting amendments.

S.1 (For the People Act) gives Congress the power to reverse both Trump’s recent assault on our democracy and the harm done by your party’s voter disenfranchisement campaign over the last several decades. It is time for the Senator to accept that we live in a representative democracy which works best when all citizens—not just white people—are encouraged to vote and when their Senator responds to their needs and priorities rather than only those of special interests. I expect him/her to support this vital piece of legislation as drafted.
