Background

Taming the pandemic is Biden’s job #1. On the day after his Inauguration, he laid out how he’d do it in his 200-page American Rescue Plan.

While the program does focus on vaccines and masks, the first priority of the science-based plan is to “restore trust.” It’s an acknowledgment that trust is key to any public health response.

Biden aims to make the federal government “the source of truth” for clear, accessible, scientifically accurate information about Covid.

To start, Biden will have experts, not a politician, briefing the public. Also, to build trust, he is not withholding disturbing information, such as forecasts that deaths will soon top 500,000.

But Americans also need to see government working directly for them. So Biden promises to:

Ensure everyone is tested regularly, and scale-up production of rapid tests.
Expand the use of masks, especially on public transportation.
Address health inequities.
Turbocharge vaccine efforts, including deploying mobile units in underserved areas and expanding the number of vaccinators.
Move funds to state, local and tribal governments -- which are financially exhausted -- to grow their campaigns.

Now we have a science-driven plan to fight Covid. Our MoCs must support our last best chance for taming the pandemic.
