Background

On Wednesday, the Dems took control of Senate. GOP obstruction had already begun with Hawley blocking DHS nominee’s confirmation and McConnell threatening to paralyze Senate operations.

Schumer wants to resurrect the 2001 approach to 50-50 split:

Dems chair evenly split committee memberships.
Bills/nominations tied in committee advance.
Dems set Senate schedule and determine legislation considered.

He’s rejected McConnell’s demand for two-year promise to maintain filibuster despite McConnell’s threat to hold up Senate business.

In a functioning democracy, voters choose leaders; leaders govern; and, depending on the results, voters either return them to power or give their opponents the chance to govern. Gerrymandering, Senate filibuster, Electoral College, and campaign finance corruption make effective governing impossible.

Biden’s bold agenda attacks these problems head-on:

COVID rescue plan, and police and immigration reform will quickly, visibly make meaningful differences in peoples’ lives.
For the People Act will deepen democracy by protecting and expanding voting rights, eliminating gerrymandering, and reforming campaign financing.

Threatening to eliminate the filibuster is the best way to get GOP cooperation. If McConnell won’t relent, employing the “nuclear option” ends debate and approves the organizing resolution with 51 votes. If recalcitrance persists, it can kill the filibuster.
