ACCOUNTABILITY FOR ATTEMPTED COUP IS PREREQUISITE FOR STRENGTHENING DEMOCRACY
Jump to today’s actions:
Background
To ensure no repeat of Wednesday’s attempted coup, Congress must demand accountability for all colluders and enact legislation precluding such behavior.
Trump’s immediate removal
Prevents further irreparable damage to democratic institutions and warns future wannabe authoritarians such behavior’s intolerable.
Disqualifies him from public office and receipt of lifetime $200,000+ pension, $1 million annual travel allowance, full secret service detail.
Domestic terrorists, armed with deadly weapons, nooses, and plastic handcuffs, whose ranks included law enforcement members, local politicians, and ex-military, must be swiftly punished. Congress must also criminalize domestic terrorism.
The 14th Amendment, disallowing from serving in Congress anyone engaging in “insurrection” against the Constitution or aiding its enemies, supports removal of those repeating lies of a stolen election and voting to overturn its results.
Congress must also investigate:
Networks of violent right-wing hate groups and Republican organizations who mobilized and bankrolled it.
Capitol Police who cooperated with or aided rioters.
Federal officials who prevented proper police mobilization, and Trump-installed Pentagon leaders, who only belatedly authorized National Guard deployment.
Social media companies’ promotion of disinformation and radicalization fueling the sedition.
For real healing, however, Democrats must demonstrate to victims of soaring economic inequality that the government can meaningfully improve their lives.
