Background
Georgia’s election of two Democratic Senators yesterday should have been a time for celebrating.
Instead, we saw a Trump-incited attempted coup abetted by GOP co-conspirators—by a rioting mob of white supremacist terrorists and by members of Congress—both trying to overturn the election. Armed with firearms and explosive devices, Capitol Police allowed these domestic terrorists to occupy the Capitol, where they looted and destroyed offices and property, risked the lives of democratically elected representatives, displayed Confederate flags, and delayed the 2020 election’s certification.
Even after Congress reconvened, 8 Senators and 139 Representatives voted to overturn the election results.
Now is not the time for a recess. Congress must immediately reconvene to punish these multiple attacks on our democracy.
--For his traitorous behavior, Trump must be promptly impeached, removed, and disqualified from holding future office, which would also prevent him from pardoning himself and other traitors or committing further assaults on the Constitution;
--Members of Congress who violated their oath of office and helped incite this violence must be expelled
--Congress must condemn and weed out law enforcement’s systematic racism exposed by the privileged treatment of white nationalist rioters and demand all rioters be punished.
