BIDEN: USE YOUR EXECUTIVE AUTHORITY TO PROTECT IMMIGRANTS
QUICK READ: Time is running out for President Biden to use his executive authority to provide temporary protection for the hundreds of thousands of law-abiding immigrants who will be targeted by Trump’s draconian mass deportation policy. Our Members of Congress must convince him to limit the economic and humanitarian harm to these vulnerable communities and to minimize the number of ICE detention facilities available to the Trump administration.
CONTENTS:
BACKGROUND
As immigrant communities await the implementation of Trump’s promised mass deportation policy, President Biden still has several weeks to provide months, or even years, of temporary protection to hundreds of thousands of law-abiding families:
Extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS), which now covers 1+ million from 17 countries, by renewing the status of all current recipients for 18 months and adding new countries facing armed conflict, environmental disasters or other extraordinary conditions;
Remove families and children from the immediate threat of deportation by pausing immigration court hearings and administratively closing cases;
Clear the backlog of DACA recipients’ renewal requests and the 1.2 million noncitizen work permit applications;
Expedite asylum claims of parents and children torn apart by Trump’s prior family separation policy;
Halt the planned expansion of ICE detention centers, close the facilities run by abusive sheriffs and private prison companies, and release detainees who pose no public safety risk;
Speed up resolution of pending asylum cases and dismiss removal cases for those not enforcement priorities;
Rescind Trump-era rules restricting access to humanitarian protection for asylum seekers.
Our MoCs must continue to implore Biden to act boldly and humanely to limit the economic and humanitarian harm to these vulnerable communities who are contributing members of American society and to delay any deportations as long as possible.
