JUSTICE DELAYED IS DEMOCRACY DESTROYED: SCOTUS MUST ISSUE A SPEEDY PRESIDENTIAL IMMUNITY DECISION
QUICK READ: American voters deserve to know whether Trump is guilty of fomenting the January 6 insurrection before going to the polls to choose our next President. BACKGROUND
Justice delayed is democracy destroyed. SCOTUS must issue its opinion by May 20th—sufficient time for a jury to reach a verdict in Trump’s election insurrection trial before Election Day.
SCOTUS’ Trump-created MAGA supermajority, fearing the outcome if voters knew the truth, has already interfered in the 2024 presidential election, helping Trump avoid accountability for his crimes:
Refusing the Special Counsel’s December 2023 request to immediately decide Trump’s absurd presidential immunity claim;
Taking three weeks to refuse accepting the bipartisan D.C. Circuit panel’s unanimous decision that a former president can, while in office, be criminally liable for an attempted insurrection;
Setting oral argument on the fiction that presidents are free to commit crimes on the term’s last day, allowing it to put off its decision until mid-June.
A May 20 opinion is more than reasonable, given SCOTUS’ swift action in previous critical election cases—deciding Bush v. Gorein one day and the Colorado ballot removal case in three weeks.
