Biden’s Inhumane Immigration Policy Violates Our Values
QUICK READ: President Biden’s newly announced border policy is a disaster in the making. Essentially an extension of Trump’s Title 42 program, it violates international human rights law, will negatively affect our economy, and will essentially close our doors to those seeking sanctuary in the United States.
CONTENTS:
BACKGROUND
The Trump Administration used Title 42, a public health statute, to justify deporting thousands of migrants coming from the Global South.
Although framed differently, Biden’s program will do the same. It will permit the rapid deportation of migrants crossing the southern border without authorization, by making them presumptively ineligible for asylum unless they previously requested protection in a third country—a requirement that most won’t be able to satisfy. Exceptions exist only for migrants with either U.S. sponsors or mobile devices from which they’ve made digital asylum appointments.
Biden’s policy, while failing to address the underlining problems that drive migrants to flee their homes, is devastating for those doing so:
· Slamming the door on millions of desperate people;
· Excluding migrants coming from several countries, including Guatemala, Ecuador, and Columbia;
· Expanding the deportation of thousands already here.
It also does irreparable damage domestically:
· Depriving us of badly needed workers in almost every field;
· Validating the claims of fear mongers that our country is being overrun by foreigners;
· Violating international human right laws and our own tradition of welcoming migrants who help make our country great.
Our Members of Congress must speak out against this inhumane policy and work for compassionate immigration reform.
