MAGA Budget Plan’s Devastating Consequences for Americans and Our Environment

BACKGROUND
If Congress doesn’t raise the debt ceiling by June, the government will be unable to fund such programs as Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans’ benefits or pay other already incurred obligations. MAGA Republicans are threatening to block this critical legislation, which historically passed with bipartisan support, unless President Biden accepts 10 years of unpopular, draconian, budget cuts.
The recently unveiled MAGA budget would spare the massive Pentagon budget but be devastating for most Americans:
Repealing green energy programs, including some Electric Vehicle tax credits;
Imposing longer work requirements for millions of low-income Americans who receive food stamps and federally backed health insurance;
Blocking up to $20,000 of student debt cancellation for low-income borrowers;
Cutting IRS funding needed to collect unpaid taxes from tax cheats;
Eviscerating Biden’s climate and clean energy agenda and removing constraints on fossil fuel production.
In return, MAGA Republicans offer only a one-year debt ceiling raise, requiring another debt-ceiling vote before the 2024 election.
Refusing to act would also have catastrophic consequences—a painful recession here and the possibility of a global economic collapse.
President Biden has forcefully rejected this MAGA blackmail, insisting that Congress raise the debt limit without preconditions, as is normally done. Our MoCs must do likewise.
