SUPREME COURT THREATENS WOMEN’S SOCIAL & HEALTH ADVANCES
The MAGA majority ignores the scientific studies conclusively demonstrating the benefits of reproductive freedom for women, their families, the economy, and our country.
QUICK READ: Scientific evidence demonstrates that when abortions are available and accessible, maternal mortality’s lower, teen births and marriages are fewer, women are more likely to finish high school, attend college, and obtain higher-paying jobs, and their children are less likely to be single parents or welfare recipients and more likely to graduate from college. The Supreme Court is denying women and their families the right to succeed and our society to benefit.
TAKE ACTION NOW:
BACKGROUND
Overturning Roe will have devastating effects, particularly on low-income women of color. It will also negatively affect the American economy, which has already lost $105 billion annually from women’s reduced labor force participation and earnings in states with anti-abortion legislation.
Despite the extensive social science literature presented to SCOTUS that abortion access has broad social and economic benefits for women and their families, Alito’s draft opinion is the latest example of SCOTUS’ rejection of science and expertise.
Women denied abortions are more likely to live in poverty, use social services, stay with a violent partner, and suffer anxiety and depression, and less likely to be employed full-time or have higher-paying occupations—which negatively affect their existing and future children.
Those able to obtain abortions have lower teen births and marriages, reduced maternal mortality, higher educational attainment and career advancement, and better mental and physical health. Their children are less likely to be neglected or abused, single parents or welfare recipients and more likely to graduate from college.
Constitutional rights must be guided by evidence, not ideology. That SCOTUS has chosen the latter requires its rebalancing, which will only happen if we elect more progressive Democrats in November.
