THIS OUT-OF-CONTROL SUPREME COURT MUST BE STOPPED
Unless the Supreme Court is expanded by adding justices who will honor the Constitution and legal precedents and work for all Americans, we will lose our freedoms and our democracy.
QUICK READ: Overturning Roe v. BACKGROUND
The expectation of reproductive freedom, supported by a wide unchanging margin for 50 years, is about to be shattered.
Not because of changing public opinion, but because right-wing MAGA Republicans have finally packed SCOTUS with ideologues committed to imposing their patriarchal, conservative Christian vision on America.
Overturning Roe is just the beginning. MAGA-controlled legislatures and governors are already working to criminalize abortion pills, emergency contraception, miscarriages, and abortion-related travel and to classify abortion as homicide—all to impose a national abortion ban or give fetuses 14th Amendment protection.
The legal reason for striking down abortion rights—that no constitutionally protected privacy right exists—is equally applicable to the other secular liberty rights, like marriage equality, LGBTQ equality, and contraception. And this precedent-be-damned attitude may extend to pending gun control, climate, and immigration cases, and even funding for migrant childrens’ education.
In this new era of judicial activism, no precedent is safe, and we’ll soon be living in a theocracy, not a democracy.
Only passage of the Judiciary Act, which rebalances SCOTUS by adding four new justices who will honor the constitution and safeguard our democracy and our rights, can stop this horrendous outcome for us and future generations.
