OUR LAST BEST CHANCE ON CLIMATE
Congress may soon pass the most significant climate change legislation ever. It would alter every sector of society.
QUICK READ: The UN Secretary-General says that the world is at a “pivotal moment.” Business as usual would be catastrophic. The best chance of slowing the rate of the disastrous climate crisis is contained in the $3.5 trillion reconciliation bill. Entire industries oppose it, and the bill’s prognosis hangs on getting all Democratic Senators on board. They need to hear from us.
TAKE ACTION NOW:
BACKGROUND
The climate crisis’ “natural” disasters have cost the US more than $630 billion in the last five years alone, and it will only get worse.
The climate response, which is shooting through Congress, needs your help.
The $3.5 trillion Build Back Better bill would be our most ambitious response ever. It includes:
Eliminating coal-fired electricity by 2030.
Building a clean energy network to deliver 80% of US needs by 2030.
Ensuring that 50 to 61% of all new vehicle sales are EVs by 2030.
Creating a Climate Conservation Corps to aid in disaster recovery and protecting public lands.
Taxing methane emissions, responsible for 20% of warming.
The UN just concluded that the scale of the climate crisis, already unprecedented, is unstoppable because so much carbon is already loaded into the atmosphere. But changes can be slowed.
The energy industry claims it’s “under attack,” the US Chamber of Commerce has vowed to defeat the bill, and Sen. Joe Manchin (D), a critical vote in the 50-50 Senate, calls much of the bill “very, very disturbing.”
We must tell our members of Congress we want a better future than the one we’re headed for.
