TRUMP v. DEMOCRACY: CAN DEMOCRACY SURVIVE?
Jump to today’s actions:
Background
Trump’s war on the Constitution, our laws, and democracy itself, which he began while running for President, continued during his presidency, abetted by a GOP that feared his wrath, and became even more toxic after American voters rejected him.
Now it’s undermining confidence in our elections, further dividing the country, and threatening the peaceful transition of power, radicalizing much of the GOP base—turning Democrats into not just citizens with different views but enemies requiring annihilation—and welcoming white nationalists into the GOP.
Trump’s been abetted in his attempted coup by a GOP that refuses to count votes it doesn’t like and spreads his lies about voter fraud.
While reconstructing and buttressing our democratic institutions against future assaults will be long and hard, we must make clear that GOP’s seditious behavior intolerable
--Biden and the Dems must fight back in the court of public opinion
--The 126 House members who asked Supreme Court to award the presidency to the loser and Trump’s foot-soldier senators must be sanctioned
--The dysfunctional electoral college must go—either by constitutional amendment or support for the National Popular Vote, under which states cast Electoral College votes for the popular vote winner.
1. Call the Senate.

SEN. MERKLEY: Portland office: 503-326-3386 | D.C. office: 202-224-3753
My name is [--] and I'm a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code].
Trump’s refusal to concede and his efforts to claim a false Electoral College victory have exposed how its flaws threaten our democracy’s very foundation. So does the seditious behavior of the 126 House members who joined Texas’ lawsuit and of the GOP senators who continue to spread Trump’s lies. Democrats cannot continue to downplay or ignore the seriousness of these threats. Please thank the Senator for speaking out against them and for his work to ensure that the recipient of the national popular vote wins the presidency. As first steps towards repairing our democratic institutions, I am asking that he:
(1) Work with his colleagues to launch a coordinated campaign explaining to the American people how this blatant voter suppression undermines our democracy.
(2) Seek the formal censure of Trump and all of his cronies who have spread lies about the election.
(3) Call for the sanctioning of House members and Senators who, by their behavior, tried to overturn a democratic election and install a dictator, thereby violating their oath of office.
(4) Continue pushing for the direct election of the president.

(1) Work with his colleagues to launch a coordinated campaign explaining to the American people how the blatant voter suppression pushed by Trump and his GOP lackeys undermines our democracy.
(2) Seek the formal censure of Trump and his cronies who have spread lies about the election and refused to recognize Biden as the election’s apparent winner for the last month.
(3) Call for the sanctioning of House members and Senators who, by their behavior, tried to overturn a democratic election and install a dictator, thereby violating their oath of office.
(4) Cosponsor Senator Merkley’s constitutional amendment to abolish the Electoral College and/or support and publicize the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.

So does the behavior of the 126 House members who joined Texas’ lawsuit and of the GOP senators who continue to spread Trump’s lies. No elected legislator, whatever their party, can ignore the seriousness of these threats. I demand that the Senator, as required by their oath to uphold the Constitution:
Speak out against this anti-democratic behavior and their colleagues’ inexcusable silence.
Seek a formal censure of Trump and his cronies who refused to recognize that Biden won the election.
Work to ensure that the president is elected the same way as all other local, state, and federal officials—by the majority of the votes cast for that office.
