THE TIME FOR DC STATEHOOD IS NOW
Jump to today’s actions:
Background
How many Americans would allow taxation without representation for themselves? After all, DC citizens pay more per capita to the Federal government than any state and have no voice in the Federal government.
But DC statehood is actually a much larger issue. The history of Washington DC is a part of the racist history of white supremacy and Jim Crow in this country.
When Black men won the vote during reconstruction and began participating in city governance, Congress responded with voting laws designed to suppress Black voices and power. And that continues.
As a result, over 700,000 of our fellow citizens - more than the population of either Wyoming or Vermont - still do not have full Congressional representation. And Congress still can override local decisions.
The city of Washington was, and is, endangered by violent white supremacists. Last week, unlike state governors, Mayor Bowser was forced to plead with the Pentagon to use DC’s own National Guard to defend the Capitol.
Republicans oppose statehood for the same reason they support gerrymandering. It’s voter suppression of American citizens in a largely Black city. And it’s a willingness to leave that city vulnerable to violence in order to maintain that suppression.
1. Call the Senate.
Script Oregon Senators
SEN. MERKLEY: Portland office: 503-326-3386 | D.C. office: 202-224-3753
My name is [--] and I'm a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code].
Denying the rights of statehood to the American citizens of Washington, DC is a part of the racist history of white supremacy and Jim Crow in this country. It is suppression of the voices, votes, and power of Black Americans. And that denial leaves DC vulnerable to violence in order to maintain that suppression. I want to thank the Senator for supporting DC statehood, and I’m asking him to continue to work for it. I’m also asking him to introduce an anti-domestic terrorism bill designed to protect us against white nationalist violence, and to remove the seditionists -- including Cruz, Hawley and more than 100 House Republicans -- from Congress.

I am horrified that my Representative chose to suppress the votes of millions of Americans and to support an attempted coup by violent white supremacists. He should resign from Congress now along with the other seditionists he has thrown in with.
