WE MUST REFORM THE SUPREME COURT TO PRESERVE OUR DEMOCRACY
Jump to today’s actions:
Background
America’s in crisis:
structural racism
wealth inequality
poorly managed coronavirus pandemic causing unnecessary deaths, economic/social/emotional upheavals
climate catastrophes
federal government with dictatorial tendencies
Supreme Court that allows these atrocities and is eager to trample on existing rights—healthcare, reproductive freedom, voting rights—and will block significant future progressive legislation dealing with these crises.
Decades-long GOP effort to seize control of courts succeeded. In unprecedented power grab, McConnell completed a Supreme Court takeover:
refusing to fill open seat in Obama or Clinton administration
upon Trump’s election, immediately changing rules to fill seat with 51, rather than 60, votes
confirming alleged sexual predator without proper vetting
filling RBG’s seat during presidential election—which never previously occurred.
Trump’s rationale—9-member Court needed to resolve his post-election lawsuits—is admission he’s losing. This and refusal to commit to peaceful transition, are signs of weakness.
To restore democracy and protect all Americans’ rights, we must reform Supreme Court. Remedies include: imposing Code of Ethics, term limits, increasing the number of justices.
We cannot permit Trump to further undermine our democracy—by packing Supreme Court and using it to legitimize his attempted coup d’etat.
We must commit to reforming the Court and ensuring landslide Democratic victory.
1. Call the Senate.
Script for Sen. Merkley
Portland office: 503-326-3386 | D.C. office: 202-224-3753
My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code].
We cannot allow the Supreme Court to continue sabotaging our democracy and prevent implementation of programs to fix the crises we now face. I am asking the Senator to:
- Do everything he can to prevent a vote on Trump’s Supreme Court pick before January 20, 2021 —by withholding unanimous consent, refusing to help the GOP to create a quorum, and boycotting and slowing down the farcical hearings being planned
- Commit to reforming the Supreme Court to save our democracy
- Call out Trump’s refusal to agree to abide by the results of the election for what it is—a weak man’s attempt to stay in power.
I am also asking him to blast GOP’s refusal to vote on pandemic relief, which Americans want and need, and demand there be no continuing resolution until the HEROES Act is passed.
Script for Sen. Wyden

Trump is so weak he is forcing through a Supreme Court nominee, refusing a peaceful transition, and won’t help us in the pandemic. Stand up for your constituents and our democracy by:
- committing to waiting for a Supreme Court nomination until the Inauguration
- passing the HEROES Act.
2. Call the House.

- Support all efforts to stop Trump and McConnell from hypocritically hijacking yet another Supreme Court seat, including calling for Trump’s impeachment
- Commit to reforming the Supreme Court to save our democracy
- Call out Trump’s refusal to agree to abide by the results of the election for what it is—a weak man’s attempt to stay in power.

- Doing everything he can to convince his Republican colleagues to stop Mitch McConnell from permanently damaging the integrity of the Senate and the Supreme Court
- Supporting any calls for Trump’s impeachment, if Trump refuses to allow the winner of the election to fill this position
- Calling out Trump’s refusal to agree to abide by the results of the election for what it is—a weak man’s attempt to stay in power.

- push the Senate to pass the HEROES Act immediately;
- make it clear there can be no Supreme Court nomination until the next inauguration.
