EVICTED! GOVERNMENT FAILS THE VULNERABLE again

BACKGROUND

“The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have little.”

-- President Franklin D. Roosevelt

Soon, perhaps in the next few days, millions of people, predominantly Black and Latino families, will begin to lose their homes. This tragedy of mass evictions will highlight two government failures.

Earlier this year, CDC imposed a moratorium on evictions and President Biden’s pandemic response plan included $50 billion to help renters who had fallen behind during the pandemic. But executing that program failed. To date, only $3 billion has been used.

Then the Supreme Court said only Congress, not the CDC, could issue any further extensions of the moratorium. The effort to pass at least a one-month extension of the moratorium failed yesterday to move the opposition from both Republicans and Democrats.

It’s happening at the worst possible time. People are being thrown out of their homes just as the highly contagious Delta variant is exploding.

You may want to call your Member of Congress and remind them that you want government to care for those in need as passionately as the opposition has cared only for the rich.
