PASSING S.1 WILL STOP THE HACKING OF OUR DEMOCRACY
Jump to today’s actions:
Background
The threat to democracy is intensifying.
New state laws suppressing both the freedom to vote and fair redistricting mean Republicans are likely to take back the House and even the Senate (where they need to gain only one seat).
And by infiltrating all levels of state election systems and denying the vote to millions, they could steal not just the midterms but the 2024 Presidential election.
The For the People Act, now pending in the Senate (S.1), can stop that theft by:
setting national standards for federal elections,
allowing early voting and voting by mail,
nullifying voter ID laws,
ending gerrymandering,
barring states from taking voters off rolls, and much more.
Polls show strong support for S.1 across the political spectrum. One recent poll found 67% supported S.1 versus 21% who opposed.
Among those opposed: Democratic Senator Joe Manchin.
Additional roadblocks: Republicans will employ the filibuster to block a vote on S.1 in the Senate. Also, the law would eventually face the Roberts anti-voter Supreme Court.
Time is running out. S.1 must pass. Manchin must be persuaded to support it. The filibuster must be overturned. And justice must be restored to the Supreme Court.
1. Call the Senate.

My name is [--] and I'm a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code].
Thank you for your leadership on the For the People Act. It is vital to democracy that state laws designed to suppress the vote are defeated by S.1. Sen. Manchin must be persuaded to support the legislation, and support an overhaul of the filibuster.

Thank you for championing vote-by-mail and other voting protections. At this moment, democracy is under assault by states imposing voter suppression laws. We need S.1 to strengthen and secure voting and elections. Please persuade holdout Joe Manchin to support S.1.

Voting is fundamental to American democracy. The most recent election was the most secure on record. New state voting laws are not needed, and, in fact, would limit voting by people of color and others. Please stand up for democracy and support S.1.
2. Call the House.

Thank you for your support of the For the People Act. It is essential to help repair our democracy from Trump’s damage. I ask that you continue to build support for it in your home district. I also ask that you support the Civics Secures Democracy Act, which, as Rep. Blumenauer says, will “supercharge civics education.”

3. Take Action.
Oregon is one of only eleven states that does not require a civics education class for graduation. SB 513, which has passed the Oregon Senate and is before the Oregon House Education Committee, will ensure that every Oregon high school student has taken at least one dedicated civics course as they approach voting age. Contact your state representative to support the legislation and visit Advocacy - Classroom Law Project to find out more.
