ENABLING MASS SHOOTINGS, THE GOP AIMS AT DEMOCRACY
Jump to today’s actions:
Background
Rage and madness has led to 195 mass shootings, this year. It’s so common that last week a sixth-grader shot three people in her school because she’s seen that’s how you settle things.
One cause of mass shootings is the easy availability of guns. In response, the House of Representatives last week passed two gun control bills.
Republican leaders vowed they’d fight politicians “taking away guns from law-abiding citizens,” but that has nothing to do with either of the two bills.
The public wants gun controls. Today, 64% of registered voters support them.
But in two decades, Congress has not passed a single piece of significant gun legislation because of Republican obstruction.
The failure to do what the public wants, on guns and other popular issues, has eroded faith in government. And this is exactly what Republicans want.
According to scholars, the Republican party is at war with democracy. Paralyzing Congress is just one battle in the war.
The implications are profound. Georgetown history professor Thomas Zimmer says: “America is nearing a crisis of democratic legitimacy because one side is trying to erect one-party minority rule.”
Tell your MOC to pass meaningful gun controls because they will save lives and strengthen faith in democracy.
1. Call the Senate.
Script Oregon Senators
SEN. MERKLEY: Portland office: 503-326-3386 | D.C. office: 202-224-3753
My name is [--] and I'm a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code].
I join the vast majority of Americans who support meaningful gun controls to stem the daily eruptions of mass shootings. The GOP’s vow to fight any gun control measure will not only cost lives but it undermines the nation’s faith that, in our democracy, the will of the majority rules. Please pursue meaningful gun controls to save innocent lives and strengthen faith in our democracy.
