Republicans Are Passing State Anti-voting Laws While For The People Act Sits in Congress
Jump to today’s actions:
Background
In America, most of us believe that voters pick our leaders -- our leaders do not get to pick their voters. It’s in our national DNA. Yet, Republicans and their wealthy donors are mounting the greatest attack on voting since ending Reconstruction.
Republicans aim to suppress likely Democratic voters and intimidate election officials. Anti-voting bills are moving in at least 24 states. Congress must stop the steal, pass the For The People Act, protect our freedom to vote, and preempt these state laws.
Texas: Senate passed a comprehensive anti-voting bill worse than Georgia’s; House will soon follow. Final passage could be next week.
Florida: Passed a law that limits voting by mail, drop boxes, who can give food, water, and other assistance to voters in line, and more. Governor is poised to sign.
Arizona: Enacted two anti-voting bills. Funded another audit of Maricopa County’s ballots and awarded the contract to a company whose owner has promoted Trump’s stolen election myth.
Montana, Utah and Iowa: Also enacted anti-voting laws.
The For The People Act promotes free and fair elections. We must keep pushing for its passage. Ask our members of Congress to give everything they have to pass this bill.
1. Call the Senate.

I am calling (again) about S1, the For The People Act. Most of us believe that voters should pick our leaders -- leaders don’t get to pick their voters. But I see Republicans scrambling to pass state laws to skew elections in their favor by excluding groups that vote more heavily for Democrats: people who are Black, Brown, Indigenous, elderly, new voters, and anyone who needs help voting. These bills are existential threats to our democracy. If Congress does not preempt them by passing S1, Republicans and their wealthy donors will move our country one giant step towards meaningless elections. I urge you to give everything you have to pass this bill, including ending the filibuster. Thank you.

I am calling (again) about S1, the For The People Act. I see Republicans scrambling to pass state laws restricting voting. These bills are existential threats to democracy. It’s obvious Republicans want to exclude groups that vote more heavily for Democrats and weaponize election workers to do your bidding. I know you know the 2020 election was run fairly and Biden won. Stop trying to destroy our election system and pass S1. Then get to work building a healthy infrastructure, including a human infrastructure. Thank you.
2. Call the House.

I am calling (again) about HR1/S1, the For The People Act. Oregon is a model of fair and transparent voting that is efficient and free of fraud. Unless you and your Republican colleagues don’t want everyone to vote, you should work with your colleagues to see how Oregon’s approach will save other states money and help every single voter exercise their constitutionally-given right to vote. The state-level bills that Republicans are scrambling to pass obviously exclude groups that vote more heavily for Democrats and weaponize election workers to your bidding. I know you know the 2020 election was run fairly and Biden won. Stop trying to steal future elections. Get to work building a healthy infrastructure, including a human infrastructure. We need your help. Thank you.

3. Take Action.
Demand Justice has launched a multifaceted campaign to urge Democratic Senators and Representatives to co-sponsor and work for the passage of the Judiciary Act of 2021, with the goal of pressuring Majority Leader Schumer and House Speaker Pelosi to bring it up for a vote in the Senate and the House. One facet involves contacting small donors who have contributed to Democratic campaigns urging them to tell the recipient of their donations about the importance of this legislation. To learn more about this campaign and how you can get involved, please click here.
