PANDEMIC’S LESSONS FOR BIDEN’S CLIMATE CHANGE FIGHT

Jump to today’s actions:

Background

Underscoring the urgency and danger of global warming, President Biden will announce several actions today to combat climate change.

Biden will ban new oil drilling on federal lands. He will also unveil programs on environmental justice and environmentally friendly job creation, including one to help displaced coal workers.

Biden’s strategic plan envisions a massive transformation of the economy to clean energy. His plans include:

  • Investing $500 billion a year in clean energy and zero-emission vehicles.

  • Ensuring every federal infrastructure investment reduces greenhouse gases

  • Requiring private companies to disclose the climate impact of their operations and supply chains.

Politics makes the climate fight just as treacherous, and the risk of failure just as deadly as Covid.

The challenges though are similar: the science has been lacerated by lies to divide Americans and stall effective response; the poor suffer first and hardest; and no one will be safe until we’re all safe.

Call your MoC and encourage them to enthusiastically support science-based climate action now.

This won’t be easy. But as poet Amanda Gorman said:

We will not be turned around or interrupted by intimidation

Because we know our inaction and inertia

Will be the inheritance of the next generation

Our blunders become their burden

1. Call the Senate.

SEN. MERKLEY: Portland office: 503-326-3386 | D.C. office: 202-224-3753

My name is [--] and I'm a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code].

We can’t leave our children a world desolated by climate change. So I urge you to wholeheartedly support Biden’s climate change agenda. And I also ask that you arm yourself with facts to powerfully push back on the lies about job loss and “disputed” science. These have been used only to divide Americans and delay effective actions. The lessons from Covid are clear: the science has been lacerated by disinformation; the poor suffer first and hardest; and no one will be safe until we’re all safe.

We can’t leave our children a world desolated by climate change. The science is clear. We are all in grave danger from a warming world. It will cripple crops and health, and ravage the economy. I urge you to support those parts of Biden’s climate agenda that work for the people of your constituency who are so dependent on a stable climate.
